What a win by Smart Coupe on Kyneton Cup Day in the $50,000 Benchmark 84 Handicap over 1200m, steered to victory with a beautiful ride by Damian Thornton! After her share of bad luck, it was a win so well deserved for her owners.
Jumping away well, Damian let her find her feet early and she settled in a lovely position one out, 4 lengths behind the leaders. From the 500m onwards, Damian eased her out into the clear and she let down with a great turn of foot to put the race away with determination.

It had been a while between wins for our star filly of last season however through no real fault of her own after she raced very admirably in the highest company over the Spring of 2017, including a 3rd in the Group 3 Red Roses, before encountering her share of bad luck in running since.
“Really happy with that, she travelled much better today ridden just that little bit quieter and then picked up the bit and let go great. It was a brave win on firm ground which she doesn’t love. A well deserved win” said Damian Thornton.
Now a three time winner, including a City win and two consecutive wins in her 2yo year, and Stakes placed mare, Smart Coupe has excelled in her short career to date going from a bargain $22,000 yearling to now banking over $130,000 in prize money for her owners including her valuable black type performance.
A win also well deserved for Trainers Mat Ellerton & Simon Zahra who have done a fantastic job managing Smarty throughout her career and getting her back into the winners stall where she belongs. And we hope now with that confidence boosting win, it's not the last time we will see her salute!
“Great to see her bounce back today. She's always had the ability to be winning more raced but she hasn’t been easy to place with her rating. She should have won first up but didn’t get luck so good too see it panned out well for her today. She was suited to being ridden quieter and Damian got her out at the right time” said co-trainer Simon Zahra.
Smart Coupe will now head to Ballarat for the stand alone Ballarat Cup Day meeting chasing more lucrative prize money in the $60,000 Benchmark 78 Mares Handicap.
