Rebel Saga delivered the perfect result on debut on Wednesday for his big team of owners when tearing away to take out the 1100m Colts & Geldings 3yo Maiden at Ipswich, making it two winners from two runners for the FLR QLD team in 6 days!
Following impressive wins in two recent trials and jump outs, Rebel Saga was sent to his debut well fancied albeit trainer Rob Heathcote was well reserved knowing he’s been a horse who’s taken time to mature and learn his craft.
However in the words of Sky Racing host Bernadette Cooper post race, Rebel was “Mr Professional” taking out his win with a love ride by Michael Cahill.

Rebel jumped well from an inside gate and went forward to sit in second position, just behind the leader. He travelled well and Michael got him off the fence and chasing the leader turning into the straight. At the furlong he balanced up, lengthened out and careered away for the win by 2.3 lengths with plenty in hand on the line.
Michael Cahill said “Perfect. A very good run for his first start race and he lived up to his recent trial form. He showed good speed and we had a nice cart into the race. He put the race beyond doubt inside the 200m mark and was too good. He’s a lovely, sensible horse and should be able to improve on this.”
“Wow, only good horses can win at their debut run and I have to admit, Rebel was a dream today." Said Trainer Rob Heathcote. "He travelled super, he never raised a sweat and on a day it was some 37 degrees, (he coped better than the trainer that's for sure), he jumped super from the machines, he got into a lovely rhythm and Michael timed his winning run perfectly. Yes, the ideal debut eh. Big thanks to the owners for their patience, it's been a long road but your patience has now been rewarded.
"I am delighted how well he presented today. He looked glowing and my confidence rose seeing him coping so well in the pre-race enclosure. It was fantastic to see so many owners there today. It's a great buzz eh the moment he went over the line to win and the thrill was there for all to see. Great stuff."
A $40,000 buy from the 2016 Magic Millions QTIS sale, Rebel Saga is by FLR’s favourite sire Real Saga and he becomes our 4th winner out of 4 Real Saga’s to race joining stable stars Epic Saga, Sir Sagamore and Weekend Saga. And we have a 5th with 2yo Real Estate showing plenty of promise for the QLD stable.
"How exciting!” Said FLR’s Ashleigh Dowley. “His owners have been super patient with him. He had some immaturity issues early days and we’ve just needed to give him time to develop so we’re wrapped for them to get the win on debut.”
"We’ve got a great group in him, some first timers, a few family members so the pressure is now off (haha), and some great long time supporters. They've also come from far and wide in this boy and it was great to see a few fly up from Victoria to be there for the win and as Rob said post race, pretty sure they went and drank the bar dry to celebrate!”
A perfect start to his career, Rob will now aim Rebel towards either the the Saturday metro 1050m at Doomben on the 17th Feb or most likely the Class 1 1200m at Caloundra on the Friday night, the 16th Feb. Wherever he goes next there’ll be a Rebel army following!
